A theater performance by Sabry Zekrytakes place in Cairo and El Minya.
From 9 to 19 December, 2013
The Iranian-Egyptian artist Sabry Zekry presents his theater performance “Once Upon a Time Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” from 9 to 19 December 2013, in 5 different venues in Cairo and 1 in El Minya. Performed by Naglaa’ Younes and Abd El-Rahman Nasser, it is an experimental theater performance blending two traditional Iranian theatre genres of visual narrative (Naqali and Parde-khani), which engage both acting and music. Based on the last half century in Iran’s life and the storming events during that period, the performance subtly conveys a prognosis for the future through the political prisoner Sarin Hamoudeh who decided to write to her son Fereidoon about the Shahnama legend of “Zahhak” (the king who harbors two snakes over his shoulders). While writing, Sarin imagines herself in the place of Faranak, the mother of the other Fereidoon in the Shahnama legend.
Born in 1978, Sabry Zekry received his Diploma in Film-making and Conceptual Photography in 2006. In 2011 he received his B.A. in theater directing.
This project received production grant from Culture Resource in 2013.
