The Lebanese choreographer Ali Chahrour will stage his performance Leila’s Death, which received Tajwaal grant in 2016, at the Guthrie theatre in Minneapolis, US on 12 November. He will also present May He Rise and Smell the Fragrance as part of Les Rencontres à l’Échelle Festival in Marseille, France on 21 November; and Fatmeh at the Pôle Sud National Centre for Choreographic Development in Strasbourg, France on 7 December. The latter work, Fatmeh, was produced with support from Culture Resource in the framework of its Production Awards program.
The three works form Chahrour’s Trilogy which started with Fatmeh (2014) followed by Leila’s Death (2015) and May He Rise and Smell the Fragrance (2017). The core theme of the trilogy is the relationship between the body and faith, society and politics as expressed in the rites and rituals of death, funerals and condolences in the Arab world which have generated a kinetic heritage that offers much to enrich contemporary dance.
