Members of the Mawred team took part in PANAF’s 3rd Summit (Pan-African Network for Artistic Freedom), held from 6 to 8 February in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with one team member serving on the programming committee. Held under the theme “Free to Create: Power, Pressure, and Possibilities within Digital and Economic Landscapes”, the Summit brought together artists, activists, and experts from across Africa to advocate for artistic freedom and examine the legal, economic, and digital challenges that artists are navigating.
On the closing day, the Mawred team co-facilitated a working group on “Artistic Residencies and Relocation”, which generated a set of recommendations. These included calls to map existing services available to artists and to strengthen coordinated action between entities supporting artists at risk and local organizations in Africa, to ensure more effective and sustainable responses in contexts of repression and conflict.
