IRAB – Arab Association for Music
Lebanon
Music
IRAB is a non-profit organization founded in 2003 by a group of musical experts, practicing musicians and researchers in the contemporary Arab cultural sphere to address the striking lack of awareness concerning the richness of Arabic musical heritage and contemporary production. IRAB aims at collecting, preserving and spreading Arab and "Sharqi" musical heritage and making it accessible to both international and local researchers and scholars.
To date, Irab has archived more than 17,000 hours of music recordings, some dating as far back as a century ago.
IRAB is also concerned with archiving early print material documenting the modern Arab cultural sphere since the turn of the 20th century up until the late 80s when archiving practices became widespread.
The organization has performed many concerts and music festivals and has produced many CDs and publications, including the AFAC-funded "Revolutionary Melody", which received the Artistic Creativity Award for the year 2015. It has also produced a documentary film titled "Bala Nota" supported by the European Union and the Heinrich Böll Foundation.
