Mohamad Abotera is a cultural manager and researcher in urban design and urban issues. He studied architectural design in Egypt and then obtained his master's degree in architecture, cultural identity and globalization from the University of Westminster in 2007. His thesis was on the development of the coffeehouse position in Egyptian culture and its role in social inclusion and cohesion.
In 2011, he co-founded Madd as a research and action platform to experiment and advocate more equitable and humane models of urban development. He works as a cultural program manager since 2014, starting at the Danish Egyptian Dialogue Initiative, and currently working on ‘Thaqafa Dayer Maydoor’ (All-Around Culture) with Culture Resource. He is enrolled at the University of Antwerp as a Ph.D. researcher with a project on the tools of urban political control. He also works on teaching design and architectural theories. In his research and works, he is interested in spatial politics, inclusion, territorialities, socio-cultural representation and urban activation.
