As part of the “Pandora’s Box: Art Talk” series, Culture Resource presented a panel discussion on “Cultural Policies and Emerging Movements in the Arab Region”. The artist, researcher and cultural actor Hanane Hajj Ali (Lebanon), university professor and cultural actor Habiba Aloui (Algeria), film director Yasser Fayez (Sudan), film director Ashraf Mtaweh (Lebanon) and the cultural actor Aziz Hamdi (Algeria) took part as panelists, and the session was moderated by Areej Abou Harb, the manager of Culture Resource’s Cultural Policies Program.

The panelists discussed the recent grassroots uprisings in the Arab region, which have been termed “the new wave of Arab protests” and how the cultural sector influenced and was influenced by them. The participants shared their views on the experiences, expertise, successes and challenges exhibited variously in Lebanon, Sudan and Algeria through the lens of their personal, as well as from the standpoint of other perspectives applied to the events in their countries.

The purpose of this panel discussion was to transmit and disseminate these experiences as a means to share and accumulate expertise and to place these grassroots movements in a broader context to help us better understand the present and more rationally build the future.

“Pandora’s Box: Art Talk” is a series of panel discussions on diverse issues of concern to artists and others involved in the arts and culture sector in the Arab region. The series is organised in collaboration between Ettijahat-Independent Culture, Action for Hope, Culture Resource, A. M. Qattan Foundation, Tanarout and Sudan Film Factory.
