An associate professor of American Studies at the English Department, Cairo University, her academic interests include Psychoanalytic literary criticism, trauma studies, memory studies, performativity, and feminism. A novelist who published two collections of short stories: The Lady of the Dream, (1998) and Small Gods (2003), and three novels: Daria (1999), Nun (2007), winner of the Cavafy Prize 2007, and The Musk of the Hill, winner of the Sawiris Literary Prize for best novel in 2019. Since 2000, she has been involved in storytelling, first as a writer and performer, then as a storytelling trainer and director. In 2014, she founded the “Doum Storytelling” group, where she led writing and storytelling training and directed the group’s performances.
