Ramadan in Genaina Theatre
Culture Resource presents “Hay” Ramadan’s annual festival at El Genaina Theatre in Al Azhar Park starting Thursday 11 till Thursday 25 September 2008. The festival includes a variety of musical performances performed by different artists from different countries.

“Hay” starts on Thursday 11 September with Al Tanboura Group from Portsaid. Al Tanboura Group first appeared in early 1989 with the predetermined objective of bringing back to life the almost dead folk and indigenous popular songs performed in the past by Portsaid communities and other Egyptians descending from the Suez Canal area.
On Friday 12 September Friends Circus will revive the circus of the “Mawaled” (celebration of the birth of saints) with all its games, tricks and sketches.
On Thursday 18 September “Hay” presents Al Tannoura dancing performed by a group of Egyptian Sufi dancers called Dervishes of Cairo. The accompanying music is live, using traditional Egyptian music instruments, like: rababa, nay, doff, sagat and tar. The songs are religious and folkloric and they sound like prayers. The group participated in several national and international festivals.
Romeo and Leila will be performed on Friday 19 September by Ghalia Benali who is a Tunisian singer, dancer, actress and artist in plastic arts. In this performance, Arabic music meets Western music and jazz. It is not a musical, nor a sung tale, but a succession of scenes, songs and dances which will bring the spectator close to the state of heart of Leila.
The Jubran Trio will perform on Monday 22 September in the festival. They are three Palestinian brothers (Samir, Wissam, Adnan) who play “Oud” (Arabic Lute). They are the first and only “Oud” trio known of to this date. With their skilful, heart-wrenching improvisations that tell of Palestine, the trio create harmony, sweetness, joy and depth. They are now living in Paris where they recorded their album Majaz. The Jubran Trio accompanied the late poet Mahmoud Darwish in his poetry readings.
“Hay” concludes on Thursday 25 September with a concert full of different and unfamiliar music instruments creating melodious and harmonious combination, performed by the Lebanese musicianRony Barrak. He moved to London in 1990 where he started studying orchestral percussion and drum kit.
