Lebanese choreographer, Ali Chahrour, will be staging two of his works at the 70th Festival d’Avignon from 16 to 23 July. His first piece, Fatmeh, which was produced with grant assistance from Culture Resource’s Production Awards program, will be performed from 16 to 18 July. The second work, Leila’s Death, will be performed from 21 to 23 July. Both shows will be staged at the Cloître des Célestins.
The two works are companion pieces, both exploring the relationship between the body and religion, society and politics. Through a focus on the rites and rituals associated with death, mourning, and paying condolences in the Arab world, culturally specific movements, gestures and other types of body language are incorporated into the vocabulary of contemporary dance.
