Al Marhala 32
Al Marhala 32 is the second project developed by the L’Art Vivant Theatre Laboratory and which seeks to create, work in and invigorate unconventional theatre spaces. So far it has singled out spaces known for their rich and profound historical and cultural heritage which have rarely been used before, staging six performances in the Caves of Matmata, the Berber village of Chenin in Tataouine, the Palaces of Médenine, the Blacksmiths Hotel in the historic Medina quarter of Sfax, and the Baths of Antoninus in Carthage. The objective of this project is to achieve a fusion between a theatrical performance and the spaces used to stage it, thereby opening opportunities for spectators to discover the material and intangible worlds connected with these spaces as they are being led through the space in the course of the theatrical journey. Working in and with these spaces opens a realm for creating public awareness of them and utilising them in a manner that revives their splendour. The interplay between the artistic work and its environment generates a platform that enables each element to enrich the other. However, the higher goal of this performance is to develop a theatrical discourse and aesthetic that breaks down the barriers of communication with the broader public which has long been cut off from the arts and culture, in general, and from the dramatic arts, in particular.
