Liwaa Yazji is an established filmmaker, screenwriter, playwright, and poet. She lived and worked in Damascus where she obtained her degrees in English Literature and Theater Studies. She published her first play “Here in the Park” and a translation of Bond’s play “Saved” into Arabic. Her play “Goats” was published in English, translated into French, German, and Dutch and premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in London and the Pen Festival at Segal Theatre in New York. She wrote the play “Q&Q” that was presented at the Birth Debate Project - Royal Exchange Theater Manchester. Yazji participated in the Sundance workshop to develop her play “Terror” and received a grant from Meta Theater to pursue working on it. She wrote the Libretto for the music theater/ opera Songs for Days to Come which premiered in Osnabrück Theater. In 2018, she received the prestigious Berliner fellowship for non-German-speaking authors for her play “Trash”. Her feature documentary Hostage was part of DOC Station Berlinale and DOK Fest Munich Market and won a Prize from the Documentary Association of Europe. She has the Doha Film Institute Development Grant for her upcoming project HEIM. Yazji is a General Assembly member at “Ettijahat-Independent Culture”.
