Al-Mawred (Culture Resource) is pleased to announce the travel grant recipients in the first round of Tajwaal program 2018. Tajwaal manifests Al-Mawred’s vision for promoting the dissemination of Arab culture and the arts internationally by supporting transportation and travel outside the Arab region for the purposes of presenting works of art to new audiences and engaging in diverse cultural exchange experiences.
Grantees:
Amir Sabra, contemporary dance choreographer (Palestine): The grant enables him and six members of his Stereo 48 company to travel from Palestine to France to present their recently produced Hip Hop Jeez as part of Faiencerie-Théâtre “Danse d’Ailleurs” Festival which profiles diverse contemporary international dance performances.
Khawla Ibrahim, theater actress (Palestine/Syria): The grant will enable her and actor/dramaturge Khalifa Natour to travel from Palestine to the U.S. to complete the production of the play, The Grey Rock, written by Amir Nizar Zuabi, after which they will stage it at the La MaMa theater in New York.
Taoufik Fakher, singer and musician (Morocco): The grant will support his travel with 5 members of his band Ariband from Morocco to France to take part in an artistic residence and exchange with nine musical groups from different countries. The activities will conclude with a concert performed at Festival Diversité in Grenoble.
Rawand Arqawi, theater artist (Palestine): The grant supports the trip of two members of the Fragments Theater company from Palestine to Senegal to take part in the Senegalese Forum Theater Festival which brings together people interested in the theater of the oppressed. They will deliver a presentation for alternative resistance in Palestine.
Shadi Rouhana, literary translator (Palestine): The grant enables him to travel from Mexico to Argentina to take part in the International Literary Translators Conference which brings together literary translators from around the world who translate between Spanish and other languages.
Nawar al-Hamwi, musician (Syria): The grant will enable al-Hamwi, a guitarist and singer, to travel from Lebanon to Greece and then through eastern European countries, eventually ending up in Berlin. In this tour he will perform as part of the “al-Qafila” project which aims to promote Arab-European cultural exchange through cultural tourism.
The jury consisted of Moroccan cultural director Ibrahim Maznad, Egyptian novelist and writer Ahdaf Soueif, and Kuwaiti theater director and playwright Sulayman al-Bassam.
