Al-Mawred (Culture Resource) is pleased to announce the recipients of awards for the “Local and Regional Cultural Policy Initiatives and Projects” Grants of 2018. The jury selected 7 out of 158 applications submitted to the Culture Policy Program from 14 Arab countries: Jordan, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Iraq, Morocco, Yemen, Tunisia, Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, Libya, Egypt and Mauritania.

Project: “Legal Guide to Cultural Work in Morocco”
The aim of the project is to compile a guide featuring an inventory and analytical study of the legal and institutional framework for culture in Morocco. The guide will serve as a legal reference for cultural actors, artists and scholars engaged in formulating and developing Moroccan cultural policies.
The Arab Resource Center for Popular Arts (Al Jana), Palestine/Lebanon
Project: “Together Towards Effective Cultural Policies”
The project consists of organizing a training workshop for young men and women involved in the arts and culture in marginalized communities in Lebanon, particularly in Palestinian and Syrian refugee camps. It aims to focus attention on the importance of culture and the arts in building self-renovating and innovative communities, and to broaden knowledge about cultural policies.
Mohamed El Habib Belhadi, Tunisia
Project: “Developing the Legal Environment for Tunisian Cinema”
The project aims to produce a cinematic legal publication that presents a general concept on how to reform the cinema sector in Tunisia to bring it in line with the constitutional transformation and free the sector from subordination and censorship. The publication will serve as a reference that includes information and data on cinema, from human and technical resources, writing, production, direction, distribution, to the general cinema culture.
Al-Harah Theater, Palestine
Project: “A Catalogue and Evaluation of the Palestinian Ministry of Education’s Policies toward Performing Arts Programs”
This research project aims to evaluate the Palestinian Ministry of Education’s current policies concerning arts programs in the public schools of different governorates. The study will catalogue the programs and activities being carried out in the schools and develop recommendations to help shape the Ministry of Education’s policies on the performing arts programs.
Abdellatif El Hajji, Morocco
Project: “Bringing Cultural Policies to the Center of Political Party Concerns”
The purpose of the project is to promote the role that political parties play in formulating cultural policies. A study will be conducted on the extent to which “culture” is present in political party platforms and documentation, and will provide recommendations for developing cultural policies in these platforms.
The Tunisian Association for Cultural Action (ATAC), Tunisia
Project: “Towards a Locally Driven Cultural Policy”
The project aims to develop cultural policies in the state of Sidi Bouzid as a model for regional cultural policies, and to activate the cultural movement in the state through three main pillars: a study that assesses the current cultural reality and evaluates the cultural system in the state development plan, the submission of proposals, and the establishment of the local Advisory Committee for Culture to promote cultural reform at the grassroots level as one of the pillars of sustainable development.
Me’zaf, Lebanon
Project: “Cultural Survey in Lebanon: Phase One”
The project aims to compile accurate information on the cultural actors (individuals and organizations in both the private and public sectors) in all districts of Lebanon and to study the state of culture in the districts. The project will also map the information to support networking among cultural actors and to provide an opportunity to learn about the state of culture and cultural dissemination in Lebanon through numbers.

The “Local and regional cultural policy initiatives and projects” Grant seeks to support projects that aim to develop or change cultural policies at the local or regional level in the Arab region. This Grant is part of Culture Resource’s Cultural Policy program that aims to build a knowledge database that supports cultural planning and cooperation in the region, and to promote mechanisms that will serve in developing the cultural ecosystems in Arab countries.
